The School Garden Project

Last year, SMA Harapan began a school garden project to teach students about healthy food, the environment, and teamwork. The garden is located behind the science building and covers about 200 square meters. It is divided into small plots, each cared for by a group of students. Grade 10 and Grade 11 students take turns working in the garden according to a weekly schedule. They grow vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers, as well as herbs like basil, mint, and lemongrass.

Every Wednesday afternoon, the gardening club meets to water the plants, remove weeds, and check for pests. They use organic compost made from food waste collected in the school canteen. The compost is stored in large bins and turned regularly to keep it fresh.

When the vegetables are ready to harvest, students pick them carefully and sort them into baskets. Some of the produce is sold at the local market every Saturday morning. The money earned is used to buy seeds, gardening tools, and gloves. Sometimes, the school chef uses the vegetables to prepare healthy lunches for students.

The project has received support from the local government, which donated watering cans, gloves, and a small greenhouse. Teachers say the garden helps students learn responsibility, patience, and cooperation. Many students also say they feel proud when they see the plants grow.

The school plans to expand the garden next year by adding a small pond for fish farming. This will give students a chance to learn about aquaculture as well as agriculture. The principal hopes the project will inspire other schools to start similar programs.
