The Broken Bicycle

The morning sun was warm on Rina's back as she pedalled her blue bicycle along the familiar path to school. She was humming a tune, her school bag strapped securely to the carrier, thinking about the upcoming science test. The road was quiet, with only a few other students walking in the distance. Suddenly, a harsh, repetitive click-clunk-click noise broke the calm morning air. It was coming from her bike.

Startled, Rina squeezed the brakes and came to a stop under the shade of a large rain tree. She carefully leaned her bicycle against the trunk and knelt down to investigate. A wave of disappointment washed over her. The metal chain, which should have been looped neatly around the gears, was hanging loose and useless, coated in thick, black grease. She had a problem.

Determined to fix it herself, Rina took a deep breath. She tried to guide the stubborn chain back onto the gear with her fingers, but it was slippery and tight. Soon, her fingers were covered in dark, sticky grease, and a smudge of it was on her clean white school uniform. The chain refused to stay on. She felt a pang of panic; the school bell would ring in just twenty minutes, and she was still quite far away.

Just as she was about to give up, she heard a friendly voice call her name. "Rina? Is that you? What happened?" It was her classmate and friend, Andi, riding his own bike on his way to school. He immediately stopped, hopped off, and placed his bike on its stand.

"Oh, Andi! My chain came off," Rina explained, showing him her greasy hands with a frustrated sigh.

"Don't worry, we can fix this together. Two pairs of hands are better than one!" Andi said cheerfully. He put down his bag and took charge. He held the rear wheel steady while Rina, following his instructions, carefully guided the chain back onto its track. With a coordinated effort and a final, satisfying click, the chain was back in place.

Rina felt a huge sense of relief. "Thank you so much, Andi! I would have been so late without you."

Andi just smiled. "It's no problem. But we should hurry now!" He handed her a clean tissue from his bag to wipe her hands as best she could.

They both got back on their bicycles and started pedalling quickly. The road ahead was still long, and they had lost precious time. They knew the school bell would ring in just fifteen minutes, and the school gates were often closed shortly after. They pedalled faster, the wind rushing past them, hoping they would make it in time.
