The Critical Need for Digital Literacy Among Indonesian Students in the Era of Hoaxes

 In today's world, the internet and social media are central to the lives of Indonesian students, providing vast information and connection. However, this digital landscape is also filled with dangers, most notably the rapid spread of hoaxes or fake news. Therefore, developing strong digital literacy skills is no longer just beneficial, but absolutely essential for students to navigate the online world safely and responsibly.  

Firstly, the speed and ease with which misinformation can spread on platforms popular among youth, like WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok, make students particularly vulnerable. Hoaxes are often designed to evoke strong emotions, bypassing critical thinking. Without the ability to question sources, cross-check information, or identify manipulated images and videos, students can easily be deceived. Digital literacy equips them with the crucial skills to pause, evaluate, and verify information before accepting or sharing it, thus protecting themselves from manipulation.  

Secondly, the impact of hoaxes extends far beyond the digital realm, often causing real-world harm. Misinformation can incite social conflict, create unnecessary panic (as seen during health crises), damage reputations, and even lead to financial scams. When students learn to critically assess online content, they not only protect themselves but also contribute to a healthier information ecosystem. By not forwarding unverified news, they help break the chain of misinformation that can potentially harm their communities in places like Padang and across Indonesia.  

In conclusion, in an age where information and misinformation constantly compete for our attention online, digital literacy is a fundamental skill for Indonesian students. It empowers them to discern truth from falsehood, protects them and their communities from the negative consequences of hoaxes, and fosters responsible digital citizenship. Mastering these skills is crucial for navigating modern life and ensuring students become informed, critical thinkers rather than unwitting spreaders of fake news.
